Two Harford County businesses have been fined for selling beer to an underage police cadet

Posted August 6, 2016 - Two Harford County businesses have been fined for selling beer to an underage police cadet during a compliance test held in May.

Meeting in Bel Air Wednesday, the Harford County Liquor Control Board fined BBX Liquors, on Route 40 in Edgewood, $1,500 and Red Robin, in Harford Mall, $500. Red Robin could be fined another $500 if it fails to have an on-duty employee trained in alcohol awareness within six months.

A divided liquor board ultimately agreed to fine BBX Liquors a higher amount. Board member Thomas Fidler noted it is the business' second violation in six months.

He said selling alcohol to a minor "can be very detrimental to our community."

Both businesses admitted to the violations, which occurred during a May 27 compliance test in which the cadet, accompanied by a liquor inspector, attempts to buy alcohol from licensed establishments.

According to reports by inspector Mac McWilliams, the underage cadet purchased a six-pack of beer from BBX liquors without being asked for identification. The cadet was served a beer at Red Robin's bar, again without being asked for ID.

The liquor board also approved a one-day liquor license for the Havre de Grace Recreation Committee's annual bull roast.

One-day beer and wine licenses were approved for a Sip & Paint event by the Jarrettsville VFC Auxiliary, a fundraiser by the Committee to Elect Curtis Beulah, a pig roast and luau for The Fallston Club, a crab feast at Holy Spirit Church and a crab feast at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
